The mission and goals of the Literacy Department in the Division of Instruction and Interventions is to support Broward County Public Schools in the implementation of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects for all school stakeholders in alignment with the District’s 2012-15 Strategic Plan. The Literacy Department ensures that research-based literacy instruction, leadership support, (both at the district and school level), professional development, assessment, curriculum, and instruction is targeted to improve student learning and help students meet career and college readiness as defined by the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
The full implementation of the Common Core State Standards in grades K-12 focuses on the rigorous and systematic implementation of all of the Common Core State Standards for reading literary and informational text, writing, speaking and listening, language, foundation skills, and literacy in History/Social studies, and Science and Technical Subjects, in a spiraling, integrated and interdisciplinary curriculum that aligns vertically and horizontally to support all Career and College Readiness for all students in Grades K-12. This mission supports rigorous, high quality instruction within a digital, media rich environment that empowers all students to achieve their goals, develop and apply their knowledge and potential, and become responsible and productive life-long learners in the global society.
On Board With the Common Core
Celebrate Literacy Week - January 14-18, 2013
As part of the Just Read, Florida! Celebrate Literacy Week, Broward Schools and the Literacy Department is encouraging schools and families to plan and promote literacy activities centered around the theme, "Take the Lead and Read!" during the week of January 14th-18th, 2013.
30 Million Minute Marathon
On Monday, January 14th, students across the state from prekindergarten through 12th grade will be participating in the Million Minute Marathon, aimed at reaching the collaborative goal of reading 30 million minutes! Broward schools will participate by encouraging students to read for an additional 20 minutes during the day (beyond regular school work) in celebration of literacy.
Defining the Core Website
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are the culmination of an extended, broad-based effort to fulfill the charge issued by the states to create the next generation of K-12 standards in order to help ensure that all students are college and career ready no later than the end of high school.
